What do YOU need?

I am currently in the process of relaunching this website on a new content management system called "Drupal"...

I already migrated my marketing weblog last week and currently wonder about what aspects, features and goodies you are looking for in addition to the existing ones.

Do you want to have a better way to communicate and discuss ?

add your own user profile maybe including a picture to the discussion ?

send private messages to me or other users - asking questions or discussion in private?

Are you interested in contributing?

do you want to run a joint-venture blog with me? I could setup a project-specific blog for you and/or your colleagues to report about your current project issues... something I thought off as a project webblog three years ago ( man, this sounds so natural, obvious today :-)

do you want to contibute with a guest article? you could post your bio with the article and/or in your forum and attract possible clients and or hirers

Do you have a specific wish to me for topics to cover ?

Please let me know, if possible TODAY !

Finally I added project management resource directory to the site.

Your comments for additional categories or link submissions (requires a back link to my site) are welcome...

Teleworkers join together at work clubs

Work clubs are popping up all over - not just in obvious spots like New York and San Francisco - but in smaller cities such as Kansas City, Mo.

Open Studio is the vision of graphic designer and full-time corporate teleworker Bobby Kellogg. Like many workspace entrepreneurs, Kellogg wanted to create the perfect workspace for himself and share it with his professional community - mainly graphic designers, architects and photographers.

The join together to share a social community as well as a better coffee machine and even a common health insurance plan... Looks like a new contra-trend to the work-at-home movement...

<a title="When you can

Writing for JDJ

Kirk Pepperdine and Joseph Ottinger sent me an e-mail last weekend asking if I would write a guest editorial about management issues for the Java Developers Journal

<quote>
I've been reading your blog and must say that it's been very entertaining. We are currently exploring the idea of adding more management based content to the magazine.

</quote>

JDJ's Average Monthly Circulation of More Than 162,000* Copies Reaches More Readers Than Dr. Dobb's, MSDN, Visual Studio, Windows & .Net Magazine, MS Certified Professional, and All Other i-Technology Magazines. press release

and yes - I will - not that I am bored with my project or my night university... but this sounds pretty interesting. They also allow me to publish the article on my blog aswell so that's a fine thing.

This night I sent in the first draft to Joe, Kirk and Alan Williamson (the editor in-chief since Feb. 2001) ... I am expecting their feedback.

Subversion Setup Tutorials

Single-User Subversion and Multiuser Subversion by Rafael Garcia-Suarez explain the setup of the Subversion version control system which tends to be the better CVS. He demonstrates how to use it for multiuser, distributed projects aswell as single user enviroments. What can this modern, powerful source-control system do for you?

Subversion is an open source revision control system, similar in purpose to the well-known, widely deployed, and aging CVS. It is designed to provide state-of-the-art versioning, built from modern technologies.

Subversion is still in development and has not reached version 1.0 yet. However, it's pretty stable and you can use it right now. In this article, we'll cover the basics of Subversion, how to install it, and how to use Subversion for personal projects. A future article will cover installing and using

Also checkout a previous post...

Current Version ist Subversion 0.35 (code complete on Friday 12 December 2003, release one week later)...

Goal of the Subversion project is to build a revision control system that is a compelling replacement for CVS in the open source community. Interims release 0.35 will be available in 2 weeks, features planned for 1.0 include:

Most current CVS features : Subversion is meant to be a better CVS, so it will have most of CVS's features, with as many as possible in the 1.0 release.

Directories, renames, and file meta-data are versioned : lack of these features is one of the most common omplaints against CVS

commits are truly atomic

Apache serving via WebDAV/DeltaV

Branching and tagging are cheap (constant time) operations

Natively client/server, layered library design

Client/server protocol sends diffs in both directions

Costs are proportional to change size, not data size

Efficient handling of binary files : subversion is equally efficient on binary as on text files, because it uses a binary diffing algorithm to transmit and store successive revisions.

Parseable output : all output of the Subversion command-line client is carefully designed to be both human readable and automatically parseable; scriptability is a high priority.

Can Google Grow Up?

Google is one of the best things to happen to the Net. So will its IPO, expected this spring, be a must-buy? A look inside reveals a talented company facing trouble. Fortune's Dec 8th issue has the great article Can Google Grow Up? about it...

<quote>
So is Google, as they used to say about Amazon, toast?

Doubtful. But the fight to stay at the top will be brutal?a sobering thought for those waiting to buy in. After an IPO, Google will have mounds of cash, but money alone won't hold off the likes of Microsoft. It's easy to picture Microsoft using its Windows monopoly to lasso people into using its search?even if its search is slightly clunkier than Google's. That scenario won't happen, says Brin. He thinks the company with the superior technology will triumph: "If they force users to use MSN Search and it's inferior, it will cause lots of problems for them." Instead of locking in users, Google will go on creating services that keep them coming back voluntarily. He points to Google News, where users can sign up to be e-mailed whenever a story appears that contains a word or phrase they're interested in. "I wouldn't pursue anything?what's the buzzword? sticky??for the sake of having something sticky. Users will put up with it for a while, but at the first opportunity they'll change. So I'm not a big fan of handcuffing," he says.

It's typical Google idealism. But then, the founders have proved that the Google culture can create opportunities where conventional wisdom (and experience) sees none. Soon, though, whatever they do will have to be done with shareholders in mind?a prospect that makes seat-of-the-pants governance impossible. Of all the searches done on Google, one that can't yet be answered is whether this company is ready for prime time.
</quote>
